Code-switching on the battlefield: benefits and risks of language shifts

Abstract

In modern warfare, where units from different regions of Ukraine and partner countries interact, linguistic communication plays a crucial role. Code-mixing, the blending of Ukrainian, English, military slang, or professional jargon, has become a common phenomenon in the combat environment. This phenomenon, known as codeswitching, requires a conscious approach, as it can both enhance communication efficiency and create dangerous situations under the stressful conditions of battle.
